Hong Kong Island

When visiting Hong Kong Island, explore these top vantage points, including the iconic Victoria Peak offering stunning panoramic views, the bustling Central Pier, and the scenic Central and Western Promenade overlooking the beautiful Victoria Harbour.

1. The Peak

Victoria Peak offers a stunning panoramic view of the island. There are numerous ways to reach the peak. You can take the most popular and most expensive option, which is to take the tram. Or, for a more affordable option, you can take bus 15 from Exchange Square bus terminus, or minibus 1 from MTR Hong Kong Station. If you’re up for a hike, you can start from Pok Fu Lam Reservoir and ascend to Victoria Peak.

If you purchased a tram ticket, you can usually pay a little more to include the entrance to Sky Terrace. However, if you’re on a budget, there is a free alternative near the Peak Tower. You can take Lugard Road, where you’ll walk around the peak in a big circle. It is a paved and flat road with some shade, which is easily enjoyed by families with kids and pets. If you want a higher vantage point, consider going up to High West or Sai Ko Shan. The starting point is located at a small park where Lugard Road and Harlech Road meet. The hike up to High West Mountain would take about 45 minutes. If you are planning a trip to Victoria Peak, you can check out my itinerary here.

After visiting the Peak, you can check out Hong Kong Park when you go back to Admiralty.

2. Central and Western Promenade

Central is the central business district of Hong Kong, home to many multinational financial company headquarters. It also offers one of the best vantage points of Kowloon. Just a short walk from the International Finance Center (IFC), you can stroll along the Central and Western Promenade.

The promenade covers a vast area along Central and Admiralty and is popular for jogging and running. Walking towards Sheung Wan, you can explore the Western Market and the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park.

Nearby Attractions

To make your trip to Central a productive one, consider visiting nearby attractions such as the IFC Mall, Central Market, Mid-Level Escalator, and Tai Kwun. IFC Mall is a luxury mall with numerous branded shops, and even if you are not into luxury shopping, you can still explore the mall. A footbridge from IFC connects to the Hang Seng Building, providing access to Central Market.

Central Market

Central Market has recently gained popularity and hosts various events and markets selling items from local business owners. Exiting the second floor of Central Market leads you to the Mid-Levels escalators, the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. You can ride the escalator up to Hollywood Road and explore Tai Kwun.

Tai Kwun
Tai Kwun Prison Walls

Tai Kwun, formerly the Central Police Station, has been renovated into a cultural hub. In addition to events and exhibitions, visitors can explore the old prison cells and prison yards where former Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh was imprisoned. Nearby heritage sites near Hollywood Road, such as Man Mo Temple, Cat Street, and PMQ, are all within walking distance of Tai Kwun. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Central Pier to Tsim Sha Tsui and enjoy the view from the iconic Star Ferry.

Kowloon

If you’re looking to see the iconic Hong Kong skylines, you’ll want to head to the Kowloon side. Some of the best spots to enjoy these views are Harbour City, West Kowloon Cultural District, and the Avenue of the Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui.

3. Harbour City Ocean Terminal Deck

When you arrive at Tsim Sha Tsui via the Star Ferry, the first mall you see upon exiting the pier is Harbour City. Even before entering the mall, you can already appreciate the stunning view of Hong Kong.

Victoria Harbour

Harbour City is a luxury mall located in Tsim Sha Tsui. It houses many restaurants and cafes that offer Instagrammable settings, but these come at a cost. If you prefer to take pictures for free, numerous vantage points inside the mall are free of charge. The best place is the Ocean Terminal Deck. It’s an outdoor deck with unobstructed views of Hong Kong. Occasionally, interesting art installations are featured on the Ocean Terminal Deck.

4. West Kowloon Cultural District

The West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest cultural projects in the area. It is home to two museums, a waterfront promenade, and an art park. Several events are being held here that are free of charge to the public. One of the best vantage points is located at the M+ Museum. Even if you don’t have a ticket, you can still check out the view from the Roof Garden of the museum. If you’re planning a visit to the West Kowloon Cultural District, you can find more information in my post here.

If you opt for a view from the tallest building in Hong Kong, purchase your Sky100 ticket online for more convenient entry.

5. Tsim Sha Tsui Avenue of the Stars

Avenue of the Stars

A must-visit location for breathtaking views is the iconic Avenue of the Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. This renowned tourist spot pays homage to celebrated personalities through handprints and statues. Initially, the handprints were displayed on the ground, reminiscent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, following renovations, they were relocated to elegant wooden handrails. Visitors can revel in panoramic vistas of Victoria Harbour from this vantage point. Additionally, at 8 pm each evening, the Symphony of Lights, a dazzling light show, enchants spectators with its mesmerizing display.
