How to plan a day trip to Lamma Island

Lamma Island, the third largest outlying island of Hong Kong, is situated southwest of Hong Kong Island. This location is well-known amongst locals and tourists for its laid-back vibes and hiking trail suitable for beginners.

Getting Here

To reach the island, you can take a ferry from Central Pier 4. You have two options, you can either go to Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan. Here is the ferry schedule:

Lamma Island Family Trail Summary

The family walk hiking trail is an easy 5-kilometer stretch with minimal ascent. The road is paved and mostly flat. It can be completed within 1.5 hours (excluding breaks and detours to other attractions). It is ideal for families with kids and beginners. Along the trail, you can take detours to visit the Lamma Wind Turbines or Lo So Shing Beach.

Where to start your hike

As the family trail is between the two ferry piers, the question arises about where to start the hike. The decision depends on a few factors. Firstly, the frequency of the ferries from the piers to the Central Pier. If you check the timetable, you’ll notice the ferries from Sok Kwu Wan to Central operate at a 1.5-hour interval. On the other hand, those from Yung Shue Wan operate more frequently. So, if you want to manage your time better, start your hike in Sok Kwu Wan. Ending the hike in Yung Shue Wan means you don’t have to rush your hike to catch the next ferry.

The second factor is whether you plan to have a seafood feast. There are more seafood restaurants near Sok Kwu Wan Pier. If you’re looking forward to a seafood feast, it’s better to start the hike from Sok Kwu Wan.

What to Expect

I always start my hike in Sok Kwu Wan, but feel free to do it the other way around. When you arrive at Sok Kwu Wan ferry pier, turn right and walk through the street filled with seafood restaurants. There are well-labeled signs on the island, so just follow the Yung Shue Wan sign. Along the way, you will find some interesting places such as the Tin Hau Temple, Kamikaze Cave, and more.

Tin Hau Temple

Tin Hau Temple is a place of worship for Matsu, also known as the Goddess of the Sea. It can be found in various locations throughout Hong Kong, particularly in areas where fishing or seafaring is the primary livelihood. Matsu is believed to have the power to protect people from sea disasters. So many local seafarers seek her blessings and consider her their patron saint.

Kamikaze Cave

Kamikaze Cave is a fascinating attraction located on the island. This unique cave system was carefully carved out of the rock by the Japanese army during World War II. The main intention of the cave was to conceal their speedboats. The cave’s strategic location allowed the Japanese to launch surprise attacks on Allied vessels passing through the waters nearby.

Lamma Island Lookout Pavilion

You can easily spot a pavilion when hiking in Hong Kong because most of it has a traditional green-tiled roof. Take a short break here and take in the nice view of the island.

Power Station

When hiking in Hong Kong, one cannot miss the Power Station located on Lamma Island. This power station has been in operation for the last 40 years. It is easily recognizable from a distance due to its towering smokestacks and industrial architecture. The power station primarily runs on coal-fired turbines. It has been a reliable source of electricity for Hong Kong over the years.

Hung Shing Yeh Beach

Hung Shing Yeh Beach is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The beach has complete amenities such as changing rooms, showers, and toilets. The beach is situated along the family hiking trail. It provides a fantastic view of the mountains and a glimpse of the Lamma Power Station. It’s an excellent spot to take a break and relax.

Wind Mill

After taking a relaxing break at the beach, you can take a detour to Lamma Wind Mill. Located on top of a hill, the Lamma Wind Mill is the first wind turbine in Hong Kong. It is managed by Hong Kong Electric and is one of the renewable sources of energy in Hong Kong. In addition, there is a small exhibition center that is located on the base of the wind turbine.

Tofu Garden (Ah Por Tofu Fa)

After a long hike, take a break at Ah Por Tofu Fa and get a cold or hot tofu pudding. The tofu pudding is smooth and the syrup has a light ginger flavor.
